Instructions
Preparation Steps
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let stand for 5 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, egg, and melted butter. Mix until a smooth dough forms.
Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat to 350°F (175°C).
Drop dough by spoonfuls into hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Remove zeppole with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
Serve fresh and warm for best taste. You can also fill zeppole with custard or jelly for a variation.
