Instructions
Preparation Steps
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
In another bowl, whisk together vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vanilla extract, and vinegar.
Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until smooth and combined.
Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
Frost the cooled cakes as desired and serve.
Notes
This classic red velvet cake is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
